Sustainability Overview
At Great Bear, we believe that responsible mining generates sustainable value for stakeholders and local communities.
We strive to create positive economic and social benefits and improve the overall quality of people’s lives in a manner that is sustainable beyond the life of mine, while prioritizing health and safety and being responsible stewards of the environment.
Our sustainability approach reflects Kinross’s global standards while being tailored to the local context of Northwestern Ontario and the Great Bear Project.
“Mining responsibly is not just a priority, it’s an imperative. For Kinross this means responsibly managing our impacts while leveraging economic opportunity to generate sustainable long-term benefits for host communities. Most importantly, it means approaching everything we do with an attitude of respect for the people, laws and cultures where we do business.”
J. Paul Rollinson, CEO
Ethical Conduct
We adhere to the highest standards of business conduct and ethics, and operate in compliance with the law; we expect those with whom we do business to do the same.
Workforce
Putting People First means not only creating an operating environment where we never compromise on health and safety, it also means providing a rewarding and meaningful livelihood to the people who make up our Company.
Environment
We work to meet or exceed regulatory requirements in our environmental performance. When operations cease, it is our goal to return land disturbed by mining to stable and productive post-mining land uses and help to secure a sustainable future for host communities.
Socio-economic Value
We generate value for our investors and local communities, which we measure though Kinross’s “benefit footprint”. Through local job creation, procurement, and tax payments, the wealth generated from our mining activities helps to reduce poverty, sustain strong communities and contributes to improved well-being and prosperity.
Community
We believe that responsible mining generates sustainable value in local communities. We strive to create positive economic and social benefits and improve the overall quality of people’s lives in a manner that is sustainable beyond the life of mine.
